When we were approached recently by Driven Magazine to shoot a cover image for them we were excited. When we heard that the car would be the newly launched Ferrari Portofino, we could hardly contain our excitement.
The magazine also published a photos essay with some of the extra images we made.
Here are the images we produced and the short blurb about us.
“ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHERS
Award-winning South African automotive photographers, Sarel van Staden and Maryna Cotton, are passionate about photographing automobiles. The shapes and lines of a beautiful car are a source of inspiration for their own art, which they regard as a tribute to the true artists – the automotive designers.
The challenge to beautifully light the reflective surfaces of cars, and driven by the desire to apply the seemingly limitless possibilities of artificial light sources, as well as the unavailability of commercial lighting systems capable of delivering the desired results, led the team to develop their signature “Focussed Defused Lighting” technique (FDL). FDL optimises the relationship between shadows and highlights, which in return brings out the subtle details in the shape of the car, while still rendering soft enough light to manage reflections in the paintwork.
Photographing the exquisite Ferrari Portofino presented a challenge in that our FDL technique works best with darker paint colours,” says Maryna, “although we are extremely satisfied with the results achieved for our **Driven** magazine debut shoot.
